I believed my father owed me an apology. If that is the case, then I owe him one, too. I used to feel like he didn’t deserve a badge of honor just because he took in a kid from the hood and put up with me. Now I see it differently. He wanted me, his son, in his life. It’s something he dreamed about and longed for, but when it happened, neither of us knew how to make it work. I’m grateful for the two years I lived in his home. They may not have been great, but they were definitely better than the alternative of staying in my old neighborhood back in California. It’s very likely that by allowing me to live with him, he saved my life. Knowing what happened to many of my friends while I was gone, I could have easily ended up in jail, dead, selling drugs, and never knowing what life was like outside of the neighborhood.

A story in the Gospel of Mark describes the dad I wanted and needed as a troubled teenager and reflects God the Father.
